Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. Rom 8:5-8
Our natural inclination (human nature) is to sin (“but they were bent on rebellion” Ps 106:43), and our sin nature is in conflict with God’s nature. Therefore, when controlled by our sin nature, we cannot please God; we are focused only on the desires of our sin. According to this verse and others, “The mind of sinful man is death”. This natural course of events is like water flowing downhill; it does so easily, following the path of least resistance. It is easy and natural to sin and do as we please, with no thought of obedience to God.
Is there another option? Thanks to God, yes there is! We can choose to be controlled by something other than our sinful nature. If you have given your life to Jesus Christ, God has placed His Holy Spirit within you. If you are living under the control of the Spirit and not of the sinful nature, then your mind is “set on what the Spirit desires” – you are living to please God alone and not your flesh. “The mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace”.
So, can water flow uphill? It is not natural, and it may take some effort, but yes! It takes effort to live God’s way; it goes against our natural inclinations. But we can choose what will control and direct our lives. Are you living according to the sinful nature or in accordance with the Spirit? What path are you on? It’s not too late to change directions if necessary.
