Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. John 17:3

In Jesus’ prayer to God, He tells us clearly how we are given eternal life: by having a personal relationship with God through His Son Jesus Christ. Not by going to church regularly, not by reading your bible, not by praying, and not by doing good things for others. Each of these things will help your relationship with God grow stronger, but none of them will lead to eternal life.

In John 14:6, Jesus says “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” There is no other way to God but through Jesus – meaning a personal relationship with Christ. So how can we enter into such a relationship? We begin by admitting our sin and asking Jesus to forgive us, and then submitting our lives to him. It is really that simple. By confessing that we have wronged or disobeyed God, and acknowledging that the reason he died on the cross was to pay the penalty that our sins deserve, and accepting His free gift of salvation, we are guaranteed eternal life with him.
